The Annales were started by Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre in 1929. The journal's focus is defined by both a long tradition and innovative research approaches. It is open towards new areas of research and comparative methods, as well as the field of cultural sciences and epistemological reflection. Therefore, the Annales offer space for both renowned authors and young scholars. Apart from the focus on history, the Annales also play an important role in the social sciences and are regarded as an established medium for scholarly exchange between various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences.
Furthermore, a significant proportion of the journal's content is devoted to the presentation and evaluation of recent scholarly publications in about 200 book reviews per year. In-depth reviews of especially important publications add to this section.
The Annales are considered to be the most frequently consulted historical journal in French.
